The search for Ekurhuleni Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport Planning, Cde Andile Mngwevu, who was earlier reported missing following severe flooding in Mozambique, has tragically ended.
The African National Congress (ANC) in Ekurhuleni has confirmed that Cde Mngwevu passed away after the vehicle he was travelling in was swept away by floodwaters in Chókwè, Mozambique. His body, along with those of other passengers, was recovered following a week-long joint search and rescue operation involving South African rescue teams and Mozambican authorities.
The confirmation follows an earlier Gauteng News report that detailed his disappearance amid heavy rains and flooding in the region.
In a statement, the ANC described Cde Mngwevu as a disciplined and committed cadre who dedicated his life to public service and the development of communities in Ekurhuleni. At the time of his passing, he also served as Leader of Government Business in the metro.
Condolences have been extended to the Mngwevu family, colleagues and the broader Gauteng community. Details regarding memorial services and funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
