Ever heard of the phenomenon professional mourners? Well they do exist and this novel explores the journey of one such individual, Toloki, who tries to find new and creative ways of making a living while trying to avoid the violence within his community.
The novel sees him traversing an unnamed South African city rendering his services at township funerals in order to get by. Toloki ran away from home after being chased away by his resentful father.
He meets an old childhood friend, Noria, at her son’s funeral and they decide to move in together and learn more from each other. Death is the main theme of this novel with its omnipresence being unavoidable Toloki sees no other option but to incorporate it in every day life.
