The 5000th person has been vaccinated at the Zwartkops drive thru in Centurion.
39-year-old- Tamie Allah was taken by surprise when site management and volunteers gathered to make the announcement.
“We have been running this drive thru for 10 days and reaching the 5000 jab mark is an achievement,” said Yusuf Abramjee, a social activist, who is overseeing the project. It’s a partnership between the community and the Gauteng Government.
“I was shocked but delighted to hear that I was number 5000. What an honour! The service at this drive thru is just awesome. I drove from my home in Erasmuskloof, east of Pretoria to come to this drive thru,” said the 39-year-old health and safety consultant.
Dr Munnira Moosa, who has been volunteering at the site, administered the Johnson vaccine to Tamie.
Dr Moosa said: “Congratulations to Tamie. I had the honour of jabbing her.” A hamper of vitamins was presented to Tamie, sponsored by Amka Products.
Abramjee said about 500 vaccines were being administered every day, on average, at Zwartkops. The site is on the R55 road between Laudium and Sunderland Ridge.
“We have seen large turnouts since registration for over 18s opened last Friday. It is also encouraging to see more and more senior citizens coming out to get their jabs, in the luxury of the vehicles,” added Abramjee.
He again thanked all the volunteers and sponsors.“Doctors, nurses, paramedics, medical students and members of the community have been coming to the site to serve. We salute all of them. This is active citizenry at its best,” he said.
Gauteng Health MEC, Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi, praised volunteers for vaccinating thousands of people when she visited the drive thru at the weekend.
Queues start gathering from as early as 7am. “But they move along…we have several vaccination bays active.”
The Zwarrkops drive thru is open Mon-Thu and Sat from 9am to 3pm. On Fridays, it’s open from 2pm to 4pm.
