2 170 SAPS vehicles await for repairs in Gauteng province

Police Minister Bheki Cele has confirmed that 2 170 South African Police Services (SAPS)vehicles are out of service, in Gauteng province.

Cele said in November 2020 1 407 vehicles were out of service but the number increased by 763.

“A total number of 5 967 police vehicles were operating in the entire province before. Some of them are not road worthy, which is why they are put aside. There are vehicles taken to different garages, parked and waiting for repairs. Artisans have been deployed from other garages to assist with repairs where the vehicles are parked. Our department has also increased control of fleet management. We have been using global financial authority when buying bulk stock”, he added.

Cele said Vereeniging police station has 100 vehicles which are out of service and it is the highest number. He said Benoni police station follows with 82.

“In Springs there are 65 vehicles broken, Protea Glen has 58 while Tshwane in Silverton has 54 vehicles which are out of service. Midrand police station has 52 vehicles that are not road worthy, as well as 50 at Johannesburg Central police station”, said Cele.
