Investigation underway after nine people burn to death in Joburg CBD

Examinations to decide the reason fire are as yet in progress after an infant and eight adults burnt to deathin the Johannesburg CBD (Kwa Mai Mai). It is alleged that the fire broke out in an abandoned building filled with shacks on Wednesday morning.

The Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Geoffrey Makhubo visited a disaster site where the incident occurred. He has sent his heartfelt condolences to the families of the diseased and said the housing department will assist all affected residents.

“This evening I visited a disaster site where Nine people, including an infant, burnt to death when a fire broke out in an abandoned building. Investigations to determine the cause fire are still underway. 

“The Housing Department together with different NGO’s will provide shelter and food to all affected residents.The City of Johannesburg would like to send its deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the fire.”

Meanwhile the Gauteng Democratic Alliance (DA) Provincial Leader has also sent condolences to the families.

“At this stage it is unclear what caused the fire at one of the city’s oldest markets, which has dozens of stalls run by African traditional healers who have dedicated themselves to healing the sick, and who live in nearby shacks,”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with their bereaved families and we wish them courage in this difficult time.”
