A hawker shot in the face at Bree Taxi rank

A hawker who sells wares was in critical condition after being shot by security officer, at Bree Taxi rank, in Johannesburg.

Johannesburg Central police spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele said the cause leading to the shooting was not clear.

“It is alleged that a security officer from a private security company shot the victim in the face. No one has been arrested and police are investigating the circumstances around the incident. However, the case of attempted murder was opened. It is also alleged that the shooter claimed to be protected by JMPD (JMPD)”, said Mbele.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said JMPD officers working with security personnel on such issues must be reported.

“Securities do not work with JMPD and anyone who sees them working together on illegal issues should report the matter to the police”, said Minnaar.

Mbele said anyone who witnessed the incident should come forward to the police, as the information will assist them for further information.
