The Johannesburg-based company, Abeco tanks aimed at bringing a long term solution to the water crisis as the country continues to battle against Corona-virus. The water situation in South Africa is particularly dire, due to various factors including drought, an increasing population and aging infrastructure.
Abeco Tanks has been operating in the continent for over 35 years, designing, manufacturing, and installing innovative water storage solutions. Thus far it has erected more water tanks in SA than any other company and their tanks have become beacons of hope in difficult times.
The Abeco tanks COO Mannie Ramos stressed that the time to bank water like money has arrived. According to him the scarcity of water is the next big challenge the country is currently facing. He said that investing in waterwould meet the challenges of water scarcity that is predicted to worsen by 2030.
“If one thinks about how people save money in a bank for when they need it, in the same way water tanks should be viewed as ‘banks’ for water that can be used during times of emergency or water shortages.” Said Ramos.
As the Covid-19 pandemic is expected to impact poorest communities, the water tanks and water hygiene havecome at the forefront.
“This pandemic highlights the need to get water back on the health agenda. There has been greater emphasis, and spend, on the treatment of water-associated diseases than on safe water supply and sanitation,” said Ramos.
He added that more investment in water infrastructure, proper long-term planning and response readiness is needed during this unprecedented times.
“Water tanks should be viewed as a longer-term strategy to bank water and make it available to communities until water infrastructure projects are implemented.” said Ramos.
