Radio stations are predominantly known for covering news and entertainment and it’s quite rare to find a station that focuses mainly on art. The newest addition to online streaming, Kapitol Afrika Radio, is here to change those dynamics and impose an indelible paradigm shift.
Fairly new to the airwaves Kapitol Afrika Radio has been airing since May 2019 after Khosi Mashele decided to venture into online radio following her work, on other numerous stations, in previous years.

“In December 2018 I decided that it was time I started my own radio station, as I had been part of a lot of internet radio stations and apart from being an entrepreneur, I am very passionate about radio”, she states after I enquire about the station’s inception. As you can imagine I was intrigued by the fact that this station, in particular, focuses only on art and so I was compelled to delve deep.
She elaborates further, “Kapitol Afrika Radio focuses mainly on art and celebrates the Afrikan culture in every way possible. The station’s aim is to promote and celebrate the whole spectrum of Afrikan art excellence, namely musicians, artists, young creatives, entrepreneurs and social geniuses.”
Another thing that stood out from the onset was the ‘K’ in the station’s name regarding ‘Kapital’ and ‘Afrika’ and so being the inquisitive Journalist that I am I had to enquire even more which led to Khosi’s amusement (and my delight). “Well, for the name to stand out and be unique, and my name King Khosie, so I am fond of K’s. (laughs). The Afrika is in a K because in our African languages that’s how it’s written, so it symbolizes our Afrikan spirit”, she adds.

Talk about setting trends and breaking barriers that might still have other individuals trapped within their own creativity. As young as her station is they have certainly done well for themselves and managed to scoop a Best Digital Media 2019 award, within a short space of time, which has earned them recognition and grown their listenership.
The cost of Data, however, does have an effect on their station in spite of their success so far. But Kapitol AfrikaRadio is determined to use the digital space to their advantage armed with an arsenal of Afrikan culture and a team dedicated to teaching and entertaining their listeners through the power of spoken words and imagery.
