Alexandra EFF councillor arrested for assaulting police

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councilor Moshe Mphahlele, has been arrested for assaulting four police officers in Alexandra township.

Moshe Mphahlele, who is a Councillor in Alexandra, has together with a group of residents allegedly stormed the Alexandra police station on Sunday afternoon demanding the release of a suspect accused of rape.

Alexandra police spokesperson Sergeant Simphiwe Mbatha says Mphahlele is not yet charged after his arrest on Monday morning.

“I can confirm that a 35-year-old man is in police custody for assaulting our officers and staff members, he will appear in court soon.”

The controversial Moshe Mphahlele is a proportional representative (PR) councilor for the Economic Freedom Fighters in the Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality Council, responsible for Ward 107.

Meanwhile the suspected rapist is under police guard at Tembisa hospital after being severely beaten by an angry mob for sexually assaulting two women supposedly acting as a traditional healer after they went for consultation.

Dozens of Mphahlele supporters are picketing outside the Alexandra police station demanding his immediate release from custody.
