Anti-gang task team arrested five suspects linked to two unrelated crimes

Five suspects are expected to appear on Monday, 14 December 2020 before the Johannesburg and the Sophiatown Magistrate Courts following their arrest in relation to a shooting incident in Westbury on 04 December 2020, and a house robbery on 10 December 2020 respectively.

A 38-year old man was arrested on Thursday 10 December 2020 and will appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate Court on three charges of attempted murder and one murder. This is after the Anti-Gang task team embarked on an intensive search for at least four suspects behind a shooting incident where four people including a minor were shot and injured on Friday evening, 04 December 2020 on Andrew Lally and Tullip Street in Westbury. A 26-year old male died in hospital the following day. The search continues for three other suspects who are still at large.

In an unrelated arrest of four suspects on Thursday 10 December 2020, members of the anti-gang team were on high visibility patrols when they spotted a suspicious Toyota Etios. The driver allegedly sped off as police approached to conduct a stop-and-search. The vehicle was cornered and four suspects were arrested, one of them in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Police at the time also recovered jewellery presumed to have been stolen during a house robbery incident in Newclare.

The suspects will appear in Sophiatown Magistrate Court on Monday 14 December 2020 on charges of possession of suspected stolen vehicle, as well as possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Further investigations are underway to determine whether the arrested suspects may be linked to other crimes reported.

Gauteng Commissioner of police, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has commended the relentless efforts of the Anti-Gang task team working in the Sophiatown policing precinct that has for the past two years ensured that the levels and volumes of violent incidents in the area remain low.
