Learners across Gauteng returned to classrooms this week as the 2026 academic year officially got underway, with schools in Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and Sedibeng reopening for Term 1.
The Gauteng Department of Education confirmed a largely smooth start, with teaching and learning materials in place and the National School Nutrition Programme resuming at public schools.
Gauteng MEC for Education Matome Chiloane welcomed learners back, saying:
“We are encouraged by the progress made in placing learners and ensuring schools are ready for teaching and learning. Our teams continue to work to accommodate every child,” he said.
While most learners have been placed, the department acknowledged ongoing pressure in high-density areas, particularly in parts of Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni, and urged parents with outstanding placement issues to engage with district offices.
Education officials say the focus for the year remains on learner safety, attendance and improved academic performance as the school year gains momentum.
