A criminal was shot dead while attempting to rob motorist with a toy gun yesterday, at Faraday taxi rank in Johannesburg CBD.
The victim said he was approached by a man who took out a gun look-a-like, pointed at him and demanded cash, cell phone as well as car keys.
“I was driving a triton Mitsubishi bakkie at stout road and stopped at the robots, when a robber pointed me with a gun. I did not know that it was a toy gun and feared for my life. I produced my licensed gun and shot him. All I wanted to do was to save my life”, said a motorist.
Gauteng South African Police Services (SAPS) spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said the suspect was declared dead by paramedics at an incident.
“A firearm which is believed to have been used for murder of the deceased was found at the scene. We have opened a case of armed robbery and will conduct further investigations”, said Masondo.
On a different case, seven years old Bongani Korasi was shot dead by four dangerously armed men, on Saturday morning at Phiri in Soweto.
Phiri community members were left devastated when suspects fired at the resident of Korasi’s grandmother with bullets. Three people survived the shots and are currently in hospital. Unfortunately Korasi lost his life at the scene and motive behind the shooting is still unknown.
