A Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) official was assaulted by people on Saturday, when attempting to disperse them during after tears party in Protea Glen, Soweto.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the victim was attacked on the face and sustained serious injuries.
“Several police officers approached the gathering at 08:30 pm and found 150 people drinking alcohol. Approximately 50 people should attend the funeral and after parties are not allowed. When officials arrive at the gathering, some people left while others refused to leave. Alcohol was confiscated and people who refused to depart the place started fighting with police. That is when one officer got injured on the face”, he added.
Fihla said the victim was rushed to the hospital and two suspects got arrested while one was able to escape.
“The suspects are detained at Protea Glen police station and will face charges of assault with intention to cause harm. Another charge is of contravention of Disaster Management Act adjusted on lockdown level 3 regulations and for an illegal social gathering. Attack of police officers who are legally on duty is against the rule of law. The victim is currently on a stable condition at the hospital”, said Fihla.
He said selling of alcohol, indoor and outdoor gatherings are prohibited under lockdown level 3 rules and regulations.
