Introspection and worldy desires drive this alluring novel which explores the life of a University Professor who struggles to find himself after 2 failed marriages. David Lurie is an English Professor at a technical university in Cape Town but is tired of his job as a communications lecturer and seeks a way to escape by womanizing.
He initially starts a relationship with a prostitute who has a family of her own before seducing his secretary on campus. His disgrace comes when he has an affair with one of his students Melani Isaacs and is caught by the University. He is eventually fired and he retreats to his daughter Lucy’s farm in the Eastern Cape.
At this point their father/daughter relationship is tested when unfortunate events unfold at their agricultural haven. This is a good read indeed as a South African who relates with the circumstances described in the book.
