Eskom warns of short notice loadshedding

Power Utility Eskom has warned of possible load shedding at short notice due to severely constrained power system.

The embattled power utility has not implemented the dreaded system for a couple of weeks, but a series of breakdowns at power stations could see the return of rolling blackouts on Monday.

“There are a number of generating units expected to return to service during the day today but the likelihood of loadshedding is high and may be required at short notice, most likely during the evening peaks between 17:00 and 22:00,” said spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha.

The power utility is currently running at 5 232MW on planned maintenance, while another 14 623MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns.

Mantshantsha said should the shortage of generation capacity persists, the risk of elevated load shedding over the coming weeks will remain.
