Fake news EMPD officer suspended

A Johannesburg Metro Police Department officer has been suspended after appearing in a video warning parents about a possible abduction occurring at schools. The policewoman can be heard speaking frantically in Setswana advising parents to fetch their kids because of a string of abductions taking place in Ekurhuleni schools.

These abductions, she said in the video, were carried out by Pakistani nationals who were retaliating in the midst of the ongoing xenophobic attacks in the country. Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina, however, disputed this claim and suspended the officer in question while she is being investigated for misconduct.

Masina tweeted, ‘No schools are on fire in the City Ekurhuleni and there have been no reports of children being kidnapped. The warden who is seen in the video that has gone viral is currently being investigated for misconduct.’
