Five people shot during cash heist in Soweto

Police are looking for gunmen who shot three people during cash heist robbery on tuesday at Bara Taxi Rank, Soweto.

According to National Police Commissioner Colonel Athlenda Mathe, a pass-by was shot at the angle. He added that another one was shot on the thigh and a bullet grazed the third one.

“A gunmen opened fire on SBV security van while the guards were loading cash into an ATM. They started shooting randomly and eventually three bystanders were wounded. All the victims were admitted to Baragwanath Hospital”, he said.

Mathe said an undisclosed amount of money was taken and so far there has been no arrests made. He said the community of Diepkloof are left in shock.

“Later after the incident took place, we had mobilised resources including crime intelligent officers and members of tactical team, which tracked down the suspects after they had fled the scene”, said Mathe.

He added that later that evening, two guards were shot and wounded in another cash in transit heist, which took place in Krugersdorp. ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said when arriving at the scene, they found cash-in-transit vehicle halfway towards a pavement outside Krugersdorp Police Station.

“When paramedics arrive, they found a passenger inside a vehicle with gunshot wounds on his arm. He was assessed and treated on the scene, then later a passenger was transported by ER24 and GPG to a nearby care for medical care. The driver of that vehicle was found in police custody and had no visible injuries. However, he was later transported to a nearby hospital by a different service for medical assessment”, said Vermaak.

He added that the cause of this incident is not yet known.

“It is understandable that the incident took place along another route and the driver of the vehicle managed to make it to the police station in Krugersdorp while being chased.”

According to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring, on a different case a 47-year-old man was shot dead outside Newtown business in Quinn Street, Johannesburg. He said reasons for shooting are not yet clear and investigations are ongoing.

“When paramedics arrive on the scene, they found security members and local authorities already in attendance. They found a man lying on the pavement and assessments showed that the deceased sustained several gunshot wounds and showed no signs of live. Nothing could be done on him, as he was declared dead. Police were also on the scene”, said Meriting
