Gauteng’s Acting Premier, Lebogang Maile, visited the grieving family in Etwatwa, Ekurhuleni, following a devastating shack fire that claimed the lives of five relatives in the early hours of 11 November 2025. The tragic incident occurred at the Steve Biko informal settlement, leaving the province in deep shock.
Maile, joined by MEC for Human Settlements Tasneem Motara, Ekurhuleni MMC for Community Safety Cllr Sizakele Masuku, and MMC for Developmental Planning and Real Estate Ald. Nomadlozi Nkosi, met with the surviving family member to deliver condolences and offer support on behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government.
The fire claimed the lives of children aged between one and sixteen years, along with their relatives. The only survivor, a 19-year-old family member, was in a nearby shack when the fire broke out. He is currently receiving trauma counselling and psychosocial support arranged by the Department of Social Development.
“On behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government, I wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the family affected by this tragedy. We are deeply saddened by this loss and commit to ensuring that the deceased receive a dignified funeral,” said Acting Premier Maile.
Maile confirmed that the survivor will be provided with temporary accommodation while the City of Ekurhuleni works to rebuild the family’s home. He will also be enrolled in a skills development programme to help rebuild his future after this traumatic event.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
The Gauteng Provincial Government has urged communities to remain vigilant to prevent similar tragedies, especially as informal settlements remain at high risk for fires.
