The Gauteng Provincial Government says it is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the untimely passing on of the City of Johannesburg Mayor, Councillor Jolidee Matongo, who died in a car accident.
Gauteng Premier, David Makhura said Matongo was a committed and selfless activist who dedicated his time to serving people. He added that he served as a councillor for many years before he became the mayor.
“During his short tenure as the Mayor of Johannesburg, Councillor Matongo dedicated his time to the overall improvement of the quality of life of the people of Johannesburg,” Premier Makhura said.
As per Premier Makhura, 18 September 2021 marked the start of the voter registration weekend, Matongo spent the day with President Cyril Ramaphosa and Gauteng Premier David Makhura in Soweto, encouraging communities to vote and listening to their concerns.
“I spent more time with the mayor in the past week starting on Thursday, as we joined the police on operation Okae Molao. We went on to engage with communities in Soweto, emphasizing the importance of vaccinating as we continue to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic,” added Premier Makhura.
Premier Makhura applauded Mayor Matongo for executing his duties with a cool and calm demeaner and remained committed to selflessly serving the citizens of the Johannesburg.
On behalf of the Gauteng Government and the Gauteng residents, Premier Makhura conveyed sincerest and heartfelt condolences to the Matongo family, his comrades and the people of Johannesburg.
“Mayor Matongo’s passing has left me shocked and shattered. I send my heartfelt condolences to Mrs Matongo and children, his extended family, friends and comrades,” he concluded.
