Gauteng Roads and transport department donates bicycles to a school

MEC for Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport Jacob Mamabolo donated 105 bicycles to three schools in Tsakane and Geluksdal on Sunday, 11 July 2021, as part of the Smart Mobility Weekends programme by the department.

Mamabolo said the initiative aims to provide ease of mobility to learners walking more than three kilometres between home and school.

“It promotes the use of non-motorised transport and empowers communities to access social and economic opportunities,” said Mamabolo.

Mamabolo said, “as part of Smart Mobility Weekends, which has continued for eight weeks across municipalities in Gauteng, the department will continue to bring together resources of Gauteng Province and municipalities to make our roads safe.”

The school principal for Geluksdal Primary School Mr Vusi Nkosi, speaking after the school learners received the bicycle, said, “we are grateful for the bicycle gifts. This will go a long way in ensuring that learners who travel long distances get to school on time. The bicycles will also bring financial relief to parents who spend money for their children to come to school”.

Sizuzile Primary School, Geluksdal Primary School and Geluksdal Primary School each received 35 bicycles for children who travel more than 3 kilometres to get to school.
