Fees Must Fall activist Khanya Cekeshe has been in prison for two years after being sentenced to 8 years and being denied bail.
Cekeshe’s lawyer recently confirmed that he had been admitted to a hospital after experiencing some mental health issues.
Cekeshe has been imprisoned at the Leeuwkop Correctional Centre since 2016 and was convicted of public violence and malicious damage to property when he allegedly set a police van alight during the protest. His current legal team argued that he was misrepresented by his previous lawyer and when they appealed his sentence at the Johannesburg magistrate court the case was dismissed.
Cekeshe is the only #FeesMustFall activist who is still in prison in spite of the 1955 Freedom Charter that stated, “Education shall be free, compulsory, universal and equal for all.”
Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Ronald Lamola, stated earlier that his department was working on an application for a presidential pardon.
