Learner stabbed to death at Thuto Tiro Secondary

A grade nine learner was allegedly stabbed to death on Monday morning during their normal interval in-between periods. The 14-year-old pupil, whose identity has been withheld, was stabbed with a pair of scissors by a fellow classmate while awaiting their teacher’s arrival.

At this stage it is still unclear as to what might have sparked the scuffle and the police have confirmed that an investigation is currently under way. Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi announced on twitter the tragic news and that he and his team would be heading out to the school.

‘A learner at Thuto Tiro Secondary school in Sebokengwas fatally stabbed inside the classroom moments ago. Together with our team we are on our way to the scene’, he tweeted.

SAPS Captain Fikile Funda elaborated during a press briefing on what had transpired and the necessary steps that would be taken. “This morning at about 10:20 we received a complaint from Thuto Tiro Secondary and we dispatched our members to the school. The suspect was arrested in the presence of his parents and is currently detained while we investigate a case of murder”, he said.

District Director Victor Thetha was also present, alongside Principal Jeff Khumalo, and stated that the grade nine learner was declared dead on the scene when paramedics arrived.

The deceased learner’s parents have been attended to and fellow classmates affected by the incident will be given psycho-social services by the school.
