Lesufi furious at torching of Glenvista high school hall

Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi has condemned the behaviour of a group of Glenvista High school learners who on Monday, 16 August 2021, allegedly burnt parts of the school premises.

Pupils in Glenvista High School, south of Johannesburg, were on Tuesday forced to write their exams outside the classroom after allegedly setting it alight a day before.

Lesufi visited the school to assess the damage caused by the incident.

“We wish to condemn in the strongest possible terms, the burning of the Glenvista high school hall allegedly by learners who did not want to write an assessment which was scheduled to be written in the hall that afternoon,” said Lesufi.

Lesufi said the fire was extinguished before causing major damage.

“However, the curtains, projector screen, electrical wiring and PA system in the school were damaged by the fire,”

“We are devastated to discover that learners could go as far as committing an act of arson, destroying school infrastructure in the process just to escape an important task,” said Lesufi.

He said they will not fix the damage caused by the fire, and investigations into the matter is being handled by the SGB of the school.
