Life imprisonment for rapist pensioner

The government’s zero tolerance regarding rape and gender based violence has reflected itself through the harsh sentences given lately.

A 68-year-old man was given life imprisonment this past Monday, 2 March 2020 at the Johannesburg Magistrates Court for a rape he committed on 10 December 2018.

The said suspect was visiting a friend of his who happened to live with his 11-year-old niece in Bassonia.

“The accused grabbed the victim and took her to the toilet when the uncle had left them to take a bath while they were watching TV”, says Captain Xoli Mbele.

The little girl screamed and tried to jump out of the window before the uncle came to her rescue. Mondeor police were then called and the suspect was apprehended.

Captain Mbele later explained that the harsh sentence was delivered in the hope of scaring away would be future offenders.

Sergeant Winnas Baloyi was commended for his diligence on the case which led to the arrest.
