Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Urban Planning and CoGTA is aware of the ongoing demolitions currently underway in Ward 109, Alexandra Township.
The demolitions are being carried out by the City of Johannesburg. Thus far, approximately 80 illegally built shacks have been demolished, after the City attained a Court order to do some months ago.
“I appeal to our people who are desperate for housing not to illegally occupy land to build shacks”, says MEC Maile.
These illegal occupations or building of shacks are a manifestation of populist sloganeering by certain parties or political figures to play with desperations and cries of our people.
The ANC-led Provincial Government of Gauteng will be prioritising the housing needs of our people as one of our key electoral promises. In the next coming five (5) years Mega Human Settlements will be rolled-out to meet the housing demands of our people.
“One of the major things we will be doing in the coming months will be to handover houses that have been built to deserving and qualifying beneficiaries. This is part of our deliberate strategy to respond to the housing backlog across the Province,” continued MEC Maile.
The MEC has made a special appeal to the City of Johannesburg to provide alternative accommodation for the affected.
