Economic Freedom Fighter’s Commander in Chief Julius Malema, and National Spokesperson Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi appeared at the Randburg Magistrate court for assaulting some South African Police Service (SAPS) officials at Mama Winnie Madikezela Mandela’s funeral last year April.
Afri Forum wrote a letter to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) asking why the charges of assault hadn’t been taken to court. The NPA is accused of dragging its feet to bring the matter to court since it took law enforcement 19 months to take action.
Julius Malema told the media after the court appearance that it was a waste of time for them to attend the court hearing, and he admitted to a scuffle occurring with the police during Mama Winnie’s burial.
“We are a law enforcement authority and we are dictated by the principles and law on what should transpire. A prosecutorial process will take place after the content in the docket has been studied and if the content dictates that further investigations must be conducted before a decision can be made.
“What transpired today is the outstanding investigations that needed to be concluded before a decision is made. This has nothing to do with Afri Forum and it should be clear that no one will dictate to NPA on how to do its work,” said NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane.
Currently the case is being investigated by the NPA and has been postponed to March 2020.
