Martha Marais receives settlement from Health department

In May 2019 Martha Marais was found by her family tied to a bench on the floor at a Mamelodi hospital and a video of the incident went viral leading to aninvestigation. The family reported the case to the local police station, however, no investigation was done by the South African Police Service (SAPS). The South African Human Rights Commission then represented the family for assault in court.

The 76 year old received an undisclosed amount of money from the Department of health following Bandile Masuku’s visit to the family on Sunday.

The MEC said he takes full responsibility on behalf of the staff involved in the incident, and it has been confirmed that the CEO of Mamelodi Hospital has been replaced and other staff members will go through management training. The Marais family further stated that their mother is doing well and talks less about the unfortunate incident that took place at the Mamelodi hospital.
