MEC Mazibuko welcomes arrest of three Traffic Officers

Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Faith Mazibuko has welcomed the arrest of three Gauteng Traffic Police officers in Midrand. The officers were detained on Friday for allegedly soliciting and receiving bribes.

This was after the South African Police Service (SAPS) receiveda tip-off that the officers went to a house in Midrand and demanded a bribe. The officers are said to have been cornered by the SAPS and arrested in Midrand, as they allegedly went to collect the remainder of the bribe they demanded.

“I welcome the arrest of the 3 Gauteng Special Law Enforcement Unit officers, for allegedly soliciting and receiving a bribe. The law must take its course, without fear or favour,” said MEC Mazibuko.

The three arrested traffic officers belong to the Special Law Enforcement Unit (SLEU).

“It was alleged that the SLEU officers were arrested by the members of the SAPS from Midrand,” said MEC Mazibuko.

Despite the pending investigation of the case, MEC Mazibuko said that the department will issue letters of intent to suspend the three.

“The Gauteng Department of Community safety will issue the three officers with letters of intent to suspend them,” said MEC Mazibuko.

Pinkie Numa, the spokeswoman of the department told Gauteng News that this must serve as a warning to other law enforcement officers to refrain from engaging in criminal activities.

“We hope the arrest of three members would send a strong message to colleagues that corruption will not be tolerated,” said Numa.
