Patients urged to use other facilities as Charlotte Maxeke Hospital remain closed

The Gauteng department of health has advised the public of the diversion of Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH) services to other hospitals across the province as the facility remains closed.

This comes after a fire gutted several sections of the facility three weeks ago.

The Head of communication at the Gauteng Health Department Motalatale Modiba said all elective surgery or procedures are postponed for the period of the closure of the hospital.

“These will have to be rebooked once the facility is operational again. Patients are advised that in case of an emergency they should go to their nearest health facility for assistance,” said Modiba.

Modiba said all patients who were admitted at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital  are seen by consultants at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto, Bertha Gxowa Hospital in Germiston and Helen Joseph Hospital in Auckland Park.

“To collect medication, present your medical script and hospital card at your nearest hospital pharmacy,” said Modiba.

Modiba said that transplant patients can collect their immunosuppressive medication at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital on Thursday morning.

“We wish to apologise for the inconvenience caused to the patients and community at large and also appreciate the overwhelming support that has been coming through from various quarters,” added Modiba.
