Police chase leads to firearms recovery

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department arrested four suspects for possession of unlicensed firearms in Thokoza on 1 November.

What started as a high-speed chase for reckless driving ended in the recovery of an AK-47 rifle and two 9mm firearms.

According to EMPD Spokesperson Kelebogile Thepa, three of the suspects fled once the vehicle was cornered on Eloff Street in Thokoza.

“In the process, one of the fleeing suspects dropped an AK47,” said Thepa.

Thepa said officers arrested the four suspects who remained in the vehicle when their accomplices fled.

“They searched the vehicle and recovered two 9mm firearms.”

Thepa said the suspects were charged with possession of unlicensed firearm, possession of unlicensed ammunition and possession of house breaking implements and were detained at Thokoza police station.
