Twenty-three-year-old Kagiso, West Rand born and bred Mami Makokoe is a true definition of ‘beauty with a purpose’ – not only is she a 2019 Miss Gauteng Exclusive finalist, she is actively positively impacting lives in her community through her philanthropic workand using her current reign as Miss Kagiso 2018 to empower young people. Women and children’s rights are very close to her heart, as an activist of Basadi ba Mogale, she recently took part in a peaceful match to the Kagiso Magistrate Court to speak out on the killings of women and children. She recently established a seminar called Kagiso Business Seminar, which shepartnered with Mogale City Municipality and Standard Bank to empower small business owners in Kagiso and create an environment that addresses and provides solutions on issues around unemployment, financial literacy and entrepreneurship.
The multi-faceted aspirant dermatologist is also a participant in the ‘Voice It In Action’ campaign that tackles issues of homelessness around Johannesburg.“Should I win Miss Gauteng Exclusive 2019 I would like to forge partnerships with established organisations and Gauteng government and implement initiatives that help reduce the escalating rate of unemployment, teachyoung people how to save and invest money, encourage starting businesses more than depending on employment, which is not guaranteed. I would also focus on the Sanitary Drive campaign and make it a consistent drive for girls in schools and not just donate sanitary wear occasionally”, said Mkokoe.
Makokoe’s accomplishments include establishing Kagiso Business Seminar, acting on a series titled Botho aired on SABC 2 and activism work which is aimed at combating gender based violence. When Mamiis not saving part of the world that is within her reach, she enjoys yoga and reading novels.
