Residents invited to bring complaints to the Ombudsman office

The office of the Joburg Ombudsman has called on Johannesburg residents to bring their complaints to the office.

The office was established in 2015 in response to the Gauteng Development Strategy 2040 goal of creating a responsive accountable, efficient and productive city.

Joburg Ombudsman, Advocate S’duduzo Gumede says they want to ensure that all complaints relating to alleged acts of maladministration where members of the public are alleged to have suffered an injustice as a result of such maladministration are investigated and dealt with in a proper manner.

“The Joburg Ombudsman must investigate any alleged act or omission or any attempt by an employee serving in the municipality which contravenes certain items, codes, and provisions of section 8 of the Municipal Systems Act,” says Gumede.

Gumede says complainants would have to outline the nature of the complaint on an official complaint form.

“The complainants would outline the nature of the complaint on an official complaint form, the ground upon which there has been an act or omission, facts known to the complainant or relevant information, and any redress sought. The Office of the Joburg Ombudsman will assist complainants who cannot write, and the submission of complaints can be made in any of the country’s 11 official languages.”

Since its establishment the Office of the ombudsman has received 6 800 complaints, accepted 5 650 cases for investigation and successfully resolved 3 347.

“The office has investigated and resolved a total of 62 (sixty-two) own instance or pro- active matters. These are investigations the office of the ombudsman initiates on its own record, without a written complaint having been lodged as is generally required in terms of the by-law,” adds Gumede.
