Rhodes University to honour TV teacher William Smith

Rhodes University is to honour renowned Maths and Science television educator William Smith. Smith will be honoured with a degree in Doctor of Laws (LLD) on Wednesday at the  university’s 72nd graduation ceremony.

Rhodes University vice-chancellor Dr Sizwe Mabizela said Smith is a Mathematics and Science television teacher, who taught on ground-breaking SABC 2 Learning Channel in the 1990s.

“He reached many youths in South Africa and abroad with televised teaching lessons.South African President Cyril Ramaphosa awarded him with Order of the Baobab in 2019. This was his recognition on Maths and Science teachings he has done. National orders awards are offered to international people or South African people who have made a country prosperous or contributed to its democratic”, he said.

Mabizela said Smith taught for almost two decades where young people acquired an interactive TV education in Maths and Science.

“Smith was a teacher for entire South Africa though TV platform. He became famous throughout the country and taught a million leaners of all races. He also received ‘Teacher of the Year’ award through his teaching innovations. He was voted as one of top three presenters on South African television in 1998. Smith worked on another education programme called quiz show, A Word or 2”, said Mabizela.
