Department of Community and Social Development confirmed that it has spent R20 million on make-shift shelters, food and other supplies to homeless people in Tshwane since Covid-19 lockdown began.
City of Tshwane Community and Social Development MMC Thabisile Vilakazi said they also provide shelter for residents who lost their jobs and homes, due to implications caused by Covid-19.
“Homeless people got mattresses, food and other things. Several stakeholders came together in order to get rid of homelessness. University of Pretoria, Unisa, non-governmental organisations as well as Department of Health MMC Sakkie Du Plooy signed social contract. The aim is to decrease number of disadvantaged people”, she added.
Vilakazi said they link each shelter with a social worker in order to offer counselling. She said it is not pleasant with other people to separate with their families.
“We have also identified six buildings where victims will be offered shelter. Policy is abiding us to have shelters for beneficiaries.The buildings will be renovated and homeless people will not only be at a safe place but also at a better place. Registered organisations will also provide with resources and more shelters”, said Vilakazi.
