Seutloali and Jepchumba Shine as Soweto Marathon Captivates Gauteng

Johannesburg — The streets of Soweto came alive on Sunday as thousands of runners, supporters and spectators gathered for the 2025 edition of the Soweto Marathon, a race widely celebrated as one of South Africa’s most iconic road-running events. This year’s marathon delivered thrilling performances, emotional victories and a showcase of elite talent across the continent.

Seutloali Claims Men’s Title in Powerful Finish

Lesotho’s Khoarahlane Seutloali produced a decisive and disciplined run to claim victory in the men’s race, crossing the finish line in 2:20:09. Known for his strong finishing pace, Seutloali surged ahead in the final kilometres to secure the win for the Hollywood Athletics Club.

The battle for podium places was tight:

2nd place: Ntsindiso Mphakathi (South Africa, Entsika) — 2:20:24

3rd place: Onalenna Khonkhobe (South Africa, Nedbank) — 2:20:39

4th place: George Kusche — 2:20:47

Seutloali’s victory adds to his growing reputation, following his earlier triumph this year at the Two Oceans Marathon. His performance in Soweto cements his position as one of Africa’s most consistent long-distance athletes.

Jepchumba Dominates Women’s Race

Kenyan star Margaret Jepchumba delivered an impressive run to take the women’s title in 2:34:33. Running with confidence and control, she maintained a steady lead throughout the race, securing a well-deserved victory for the Nedbank Running Club.

Chasing her to the finish line were:

2nd place: Elizabeth Mokoloma (Zambia, Entsika) — 2:35:59

3rd place: Gerda Steyn (South Africa, Hollywood) — 2:37:00

4th place: Irvette van Zyl — 2:37:35

The women’s field delivered one of the day’s most competitive races, with several top athletes finishing within minutes of each other.

A Celebration of Soweto’s Spirit

Beyond the elite performances, the Soweto Marathon once again captured the heart of the province. Known as “The People’s Race,” it brings together runners of all backgrounds, celebrating history, resilience, and unity in the very streets that shaped South Africa’s liberation story.

Runners passed through iconic landmarks such as Vilakazi Street, the Hector Pieterson Memorial, and the Regina Mundi Church — reinforcing the marathon’s unique blend of sport and heritage.

Gauteng’s Running Culture on the Rise

With thousands participating across the 42km, 21km and 10km events, the 2025 Soweto Marathon highlighted the province’s growing passion for road running and healthy living. For many athletes, from elite runners to first-time participants, the event serves as a milestone in personal fitness and motivation.

As one of South Africa’s most important sporting events, the Soweto Marathon continues to elevate Gauteng’s status in international road running and inspires the next generation of athletes.
