Six men robbed Shoprite U-Save an undisclosed amount of money, cellphones and wallets on Wednesday in Johannesburg CBD.
Johannesburg Police spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele said according to the reports, cashiers were busy serving customers when one suspect pushed their security guard and entered the shop at gunpoint.
“Other suspects joint him and ordered the stuff to lie down. Two suspects had firearms and one stood as a guard at the door with a firearm. They forced cashiers to open tills and took an undisclosed amount of money, wallets and cellphones of customers before they fled the scene,” he said.
Mbele added that police officers who were busy doing their daily patrol, saw a group of men running away and followed them.
“They called for back-up and the suspects jumped into a white and green Toyota Hi-Ace taxi. The suspects were ordered to jump out and lie down on the floor. Police recovered stolen money, wallets and cellphones from U-Save Shoprite”, he added.
Mbele said while doing inspections, police also recovered that firearms that were used to do this crime were toy guns. He added that six men face charges of business robbery and possession of dangerous weapons and are to appear in Johannesburg Magistrate Court soon.
