Soweto Festival empowering lives

Soweto Festival has kicked off and young people are invited to join and participate in this exciting festival, where endless opportunities will be provided. The Soweto Festival began with the ekasi Street Dance held at Bassline, Newtown on Saturday where the likes of Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Thembi Seete made an appearance. 

The aim behind ekasi Street Dance is to recruit young people who are nyaope addicts and assist by sending them to rehab and teach them how to be creative through the love of dance. 

“The Soweto Festival assists in developing the Soweto economy, this initiative started in 1983 in Elkah stadium Soweto. We aim to empower people and businesses that exist in the township, and no age restriction is imposed to enter the competition,” said Daniel Phiri, Project Manager of Soweto Festival. 

A premier component will be launched at Maponya Mall throughout the festival and local movies will be showcased and unrecognised talent will be exploredand Sollywood will be recruiting and training the fresh talent. 

On 8 December at Walter Sisulu Square, in Kliptown, and international brands will be coming to the country and share experience with the people. Registration for the Soweto Festival participants has already closed but community members are encouraged to check them out on their social media and follow the events that will be taking place throughout the month.
