Soweto residents at risk of Covid-19 infections due to partying

Gauteng Department of Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko has warned Soweto residents about Covid-19 infections, which might increase due to ignoring lockdown regulations.

During Easter holidays, police dispersed a lot of gatherings on the streets of Soweto. MEC Mazibuko said people no longer practice social distancing, wear masks and are gathering in many numbers at one place.

“People are sharing hookah pipes and drinking from same bottle of beer. There are bashes and lots of gathering. We see people sitting on pavements, caring cooler boxes and not even wearing a mask. This puts a number of infections at high chances of increasing. As government we are trying by all means to reduce number of Covid-19 infections. It is bad to see people ignoring regulations put in place by the president”, she added.

Mazibuko said police have also been on duty to check liquor stores that do not abide by lockdown rules and regulations.
