City of Joburg to accommodate evicted residents

Following eviction of 50 people on Tuesday who hijacked private property in Dunkeld Johannesburg, The City of Joburg will offer them an accommodation.

Local ward councillor Martin Williams together with city officials visited the victims yesterday. Department of Social development unit was also deployed to assess the situation.

“If victims agree, we will offer them accommodation and beds. According to reports, most occupants had a lot of noise, did illegal brewing and drinking. Owner of the building obtained an eviction order from court and Red ants executed it”, he added.

Williams said the property started being occupied by three occupants in 2017 and the number kept growing.

“We received several complains about noise, drinking and bad behaviour from residents at this area. In July 2017, a female body was found with stabs wounds at this building. Due to bad several things happening there, police are often called. I also tried by all means to get rid of this building problem by involving city authorities, but there were limitations as it is privately owned”, said Williams.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla said they responded to the incident by making sure that there is smooth traffic flow during eviction.
