Former attorney arrested for theft of approximately R2.7 million

Shaun Muskat (37) appeared in the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on charges of theft of approximately R2.7 million worth of property trust funds on Tuesday, 06 April.

It is alleged that Muskat, who was the property conveyancer at Muskat Attorneys based in Melrose Arch in Johannesburg, allegedly pocketed the trust funds paid into his trust account by the potential property buyer transfer buyer in March 2017.

Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu from office of the directorate for priority crime investigation (hawks) said the suspect handed himself over.

“Muskat who has since been sequestrated and prohibited from practising as an attorney by the Law Society in 2018, handed himself at the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation office in Johannesburg accompanied by his lawyer on Tuesday, 06 April and subsequently charged for theft,” said Mulamu.

The court granted Muskat R10 000 bail and the case is postponed to 14 April 2021 for legal aid representation.
