Random roadblocks and searches normally conducted by law enforcement usually yield positive results and taxi passengers are not exempt from the procedure. A 33-year-old male was arrested, at the weekend, at Wanderers taxi rank aboard a taxi destined for Witbank.
Police were conducting their routine crime prevention duties in civilian clothing when they came across a taxi headed for Witbank. “While searching the passengers the officers noticed a man, sitting in the back seat, shaking uncontrollably. They proceeded to search him and discovered a knife that was hidden inside his backpack as well as a firearm and live rounds”, says Captain Xoli Mbele.
The suspect was requested to produce a license for the gun but was unable to do so which lead to his arrest. He was charged with being in possession of an unlicensed firearm, live rounds and a knife. He appeared in court on Monday, 3 February and the investigation is still underway.
