City power and Eskom technicians and engineers are working to restore power in some suburbs South of Johannesburg following an outage due to a pylon that fell.
A pylon carrying 88kv of electricity from Eskom’s Edna substation to city powers Ennerdale and Hopefield substations came down this afternoon after what is suspected to be vandalism and theft by criminals in the area.
Bolts and steel sheets supporting the pylon stricter were stolen, weakening the structure which fell on Thursday evening.
Some roads in the area had to be closed to traffic because some of the live overhead lines from the pylon fell into the roads.
The suburbs affected by this outage include the whole of Ennerdale, parts of lawley including Ex1&2 fed from hopefield substation which was also affected. Finetown is also affected as the overhead line from lunar substation got affected by this accident.
“City Power is working with Eskom to investigate this matter”, said city power CEO Lerato Setshedi. “We are also investigating how the pylon came down, and whether there was any damage to structure on the ground including houses. But we have teams on the ground to investigate all these”, Setchedi added.
Both city power and Eskom will also investigate the cost and extend of the damage caused by this. The city power and Eskom are still working to restore power in these suburbs. They apologise to the customers affected by this outage, for not having ETR to supply power.
