Former Joburg Mayor Mpho Moerane to be laid to rest on Sunday

The family of the late former Joburg Mayor Mpho Moerane has set down Sunday, 22 May 2022 for the funeral service.

Moerane died at Milpark Hospital on Wednesday, a week after being involved in a horrific car crash in Johannesburg.

Family’s spokesperson Mike Maile confirmed that Moerane had told his family that he hit a rock, lost control of the car and overturned on the highway.

Moerane becomes the third former Joburg Mayor to die in a space of 10 months.

He took over the City’s mayoral office after the death of Jolidee Matongo, who also died in a tragic car accident in September 2021, and Geoff Makhubo who died from Covid-19 related complications.

Since the announcement of his passing, condolences have been pouring in from all corners, with the political fraternity sharing sentiments of a deep loss.

MEC Lebogang Maile along with Joburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse visited the family this afternoon.

“We agreed that a memorial service would be held tomorrow [Friday] in Alexandra. Prior to that, the City announced that there would be a wreath-laying ceremony at the accident scene,” Maile said.

“The funeral will be on Sunday at Kwabhekilanga Sports Grounds, starting at 9am until 11am where we will then depart for the Fourways Memorial Park.”
