The Thuthukani Music Conservatoire is an orchestragroup from Mofolo, Soweto and they are former members of the Symphony Orchestra, who have been involved in teaching the playing of musical instruments in townships for over 30 years. They have produced some great musicians in the process. Currently Conservatoire has 18 students and the age group starts from six years, and people are encouraged to be part of the musical school as it allows students to grow and become teachers to other students as well.
Gauteng News spoke to Thoko Thotobolo, Assistant Project Manager Coordinator, “As a conservatoire we invite everyone to be part of our organization sincepeople can be part of it for free. We usually operate at Five Roses Mofolo and we teach our children how to use musical instruments”.

Unfortunately, ThuthukaniMusic Conservatoire is not supported by parents or the community, at large, and therefore it creates a challenge to recruit more students as parents don’t have the knowledge of conservatoire.
“Currently we are supported by the City of Johannesburg and Lotto for our equipment and maintenance. Our music instruments are very expensive but thanks to the people who are supporting us, we are able to fulfill our children’s dreams and passions”, said Thotobolo.
The music school acts as a hub to recruit young children and save them from social ills, however, Thoko added that support from local business and parents would make a tremendous difference. The Thuthukani Music Conservatoire will host an event on 13 October at Mofolo Library and the entrance is R50.
Community members are invited to be part of the show and the music show will start at 12pm.
