Traffic Officers Intensify Crackdown as Festive Season Travel Begins

Traffic law-enforcement authorities have kicked off the national festive season safety campaign with a firm show of force, arresting more than 90 motorists and issuing 5,626 fines on the very first day of operations.

According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), officers are preparing for what is expected to be a particularly challenging travel period marked by increased traffic volumes, heavy rains, and storm-damaged infrastructure.

The arrests recorded on 1 December include motorists caught for driving under the influence, speeding, reckless and negligent driving, and other violations. Disturbingly, over a third of those arrested had outstanding warrants of arrest for previous unpaid traffic fines.

The RTMC has urged motorists to verify any outstanding fines before hitting the road, especially those who have registered on online.natis.gov.za. The corporation warns that growing vehicle numbers and adverse weather conditions will place added pressure on law-enforcement officers throughout the festive season.

Recent data from the National Traffic Information System shows South Africa’s registered vehicle population increased from 13.6 million in September to 13.65 million in October, with Gauteng recording the highest growth at 5.5 million vehicles, followed by the Western Cape (2.2 million) and KwaZulu-Natal (1.8 million).

The RTMC cautions that the rise in vehicle numbers will likely worsen congestion during peak travel periods. Travellers are advised to plan ahead, avoid night-time driving due to a higher likelihood of crashes after sunset, and remain mindful of road surfaces weakened by recent floods and storms.

Motorists are encouraged to travel during clear visibility to avoid potholes and other hazards that could cause serious damage and dampen the festive season spirit.

The RTMC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safety on South Africa’s roads throughout the holiday season.
