Gauteng health officials have screened more than 2700 travellers coming into the province during roadblocks on the N14 in N1 North freeway on Sunday. Under level four of lockdown regulations commuters and motorists are allowed to travel across provinces for seven days. Meanwhile long-distance bus and taxi operators are allowed to undertake long-distance travel.
Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku and Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi also joined the law enforcement officers and health officials at the roadblock. This is part of government’s plans to contain the spread of Coronavirus.
According to MEC Lusufi the roadblock aimed to monitor motorists and commuters returning to Gauteng province.
“We just have to be sure that anyone who is coming through our borders they are perfectly fine in terms of their health status, because health workers are screening them and they can take them to testing processes, but they are also checking if they are caring things that are banned,” said MEC Lusufi.
Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said two people were arrested for the possession of alcohol and five people were taken in for testing after being screened for Covid-19. He added that about nine motorists were fined for various traffic infringements.
MEC Bandile Masuku expressed his gratitude to the travellers for their cooperation and patience during screening process.
“We appreciate the cooperation and patience of travellers with the teams. The fight against COVID-19 is far from over,” said Masuku.
