Tshwane cuts water and electricity to customers who don’t pay

The City of Tshwane has begun cutting electricity and other services to customers whose outstanding debts it said have grown to unsustainable levels.

The City’s Executive Mayor, Randall Williams said, businesses across the city owes the municipality more than R5 Billion.

“Government departments owe the city more than R1.3 billion while residents owe more than R8 billion,” said Williams.

Williams said they will be going after their debtors because they have an obligation to pay.

“We are going after our debtors because they have an obligation to pay. You cannot consume our services for free,” he said

Williams said this week they are targeting government departments and businesses.

“After this, the campaign will the recollection efforts to estates, residential complexes and residential areas,”

William has cautioned clients against reconnecting the services illegally. “We remind our clients that we will enforce law should they reconnect services illegally,”

Some of the government departments disconnected include, higher education, defence force, public works.
