City of Joburg official arrested for illegal sale of RDP house

A City of Johannesburg official working as a general worker in the housing department is expected to appear in the Hillbrow Magistrate’s court on charges of fraud and corruption.

The official was arrested yesterday afternoon by the South African Police Service (SAPS) working together with the City’s Group Forensic and Investigation Service (GFIS) Department. It is alleged that the suspect created a fraudulent RDP house application and charged the complainant an amount of R4000 to process the application.

Director of Strategic Stakeholder Management Group Forensic and Investigation Service, Lucky Sindane says the complainant alleges that she went to the City’s department of Housing to enquire about the status of her RDP housing application.

“Upon her arrival the offices she met the suspect who promised to speed up her application provided she pays R4000,” said Sindane.

Sindane said the suspect is a general worker and has nothing to do with RDP houses application.

“The unsuspecting complainant then paid R1500 into the suspect’s bank account.  However, he demanded the payment of R2500 before he could proceed with the application,”

“The matter was then reported to GFIS and SAPS. An investigation was conducted and the suspect was then arrested,” said Sindane.

The City is appealing to anyone who might have information on the illegal sale of RDP houses or stands to please come forward.
