The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has confirmed that a national strike will go ahead on Wednesday. The federation calls all public systems and mass to stay away from work.
Cosatu general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali said the strike will demonstrate worker’s exploitation, corruption, gender-based violence and socio-economic issues. He explained that they are targeting government, private sectors and law enforcement agencies.
“We encourage workers to exercise their rights, challenge and contest against the rigged economic system. Let us take action on theft of taxpayers’ funds, abandonment of the working class by police-makers as well as decision-makers. The solution to end the corruption system is by disruption, non-cooperation and obstruction”, he added.
According to Ntshalintshali, the strike will adhere to social distancing in order to avoid contributing to Covid-19 infections.
“Workers should ‘work to rule’ until the stay-away. They should provide only services mentioned on their contracts and refuse to accept other duties they did not sign for”, said Ntshalintshali.
