Written and directed by Jenna Cato Bass, Flatland is a movie that tackles the challenges of being a woman in modern day South Africa and the entire world. With the current scourge of violence against women and children this is a very fitting movie for that particular narrative.
Flatland is a “contemporary western” journey of self-discovery for three intriguing women, who might appear to be different from each other but find themselves equally trapped in today’s society.
Young Natalie is on the run with her best friend after murdering her husband who raped and ill-treated her throughout their marriage. They flee across the South African Karoo pursued by a female officer who has problems of her own.
The director takes the viewer on a voyage of a country that still suffers from the post-traumatic experience of apartheid, and women facing their everyday struggles head-on in the new democracy.
